Are More Pages Better for SEO?

Does It Effect Rankings to Have Lots of Landing Pages on a Website?

If you look at the amount of pages some websites have, it looks like they have an advantage. They are being ranked better on the Google search result pages—as if Google favors bigger websites. But if your website is not one of the “giants”, how can you keep up with the big guys in terms of SEO?

First things first. Let’s say you want to know how many pages the website webpagefx.com has, just type “site:webpagefx.com” into Google. If Google displays “About 3,280 results”, then it means that Google has indexed 3,280 pages of that website—and it usually resembles the number of pages this website actually has. If you want to know how many pages the subfolder “/portfolio” of that website has, type “site:webpagefx.com/portfolio” into Google—bingo!

Now we have that out of the way, let’s dig deeper into the main question:

Does Google favor big websites over smaller ones?

Yes, it does. Depending on the space your website is in, Google will favor websites that have more content. But it’s not just about quantity. The reason why bigger websites rank better is due the fact that they have many other pages that are ranking well; thus Google already trusts the website. That is, the more pages you have, the higher the chance that some of them will eventually rank. And when they do, you will have established a ranking criteria for your website. However, if none of your content is ranking well because it’s not valuable to users then the quantity won’t matter. A website with lots of pages has to offer lots of useful information as well to get better rankings.

Below are some tips on how to get better rankings:

It’s all about content, content, and content

In order to get pages with content ranked high on Google, it’s not enough to just have a massive amount of pages on your website. SEOs have to prove to Google that the website they’re managing is an important resource for a certain topic as well. So, if you’re about to become the next giant website, make sure it covers certain topics and provides value to the users. If you just publish all kind of things like a dollar store, you won’t get ranked as well.

You will notice that most of the successful and high ranked websites on Google are the ones with lots of content and pages, for example if you try the “site:”-method. Therefore, in order to be found on Google, you need to create new content constantly. That’s one of the reasons why SEO Professionals will try to convince their clients to subscribe to a plan where they either have to buy content, or use their content team to create content based on keyword research. And the more content you create, the bigger your website will get.

If you have a smaller website with only a couple topics covered, Google won’t give you much credit. How can you be a resource for a certain topic if you only have a few pages?

And that concludes the question: Do bigger websites with valuable content rank higher? The answer is yes, because they have more valuable content on certain topics than smaller websites.
